Answering the Call: From the Firehouse to God's House

Updated: Jan 30

Transitioning from Deputy Fire Chief to full-time Senior Pastor has been both rewarding and challenging. After over 22 years in the fire service, I’ve gathered countless stories and lessons—many of which now guide me in my new role. I feel compelled to share these insights, in the hope that they’ll offer encouragement and guidance to others navigating their own journeys in leadership, ministry, or life.

Persevering Through Life’s Midnight Calls

Life has a way of throwing unexpected challenges at us, often at the most inconvenient times. For years, as a firefighter, I experienced this firsthand. During 24-hour shifts, calls would come in at all hours of the day and night. After midnight, especially, it became increasingly hard to rise from the brief moments of rest to respond to yet another emergency. Exhaustion tugged at us, but duty called. Perseverance wasn’t optional; it was essential.

Isn’t life much the same? Storms come, trials persist, and just when you think you can catch your breath, another wave crashes over you. In those moments, it’s tempting to stay down, to succumb to the fatigue of constant struggle. But it’s how we endure those relentless waves that defines the course of our lives.

The Bible reminds us in James 1:2-4: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” These words encourage us to see trials not as interruptions but as opportunities to grow stronger and more steadfast.

As a leader—whether in your family, your workplace, or your community—perseverance isn’t just for you; it’s for those around you. Just like firefighters rallying together to respond to call after call, your perseverance can inspire and strengthen others. When you find ways to encourage yourself, you’ll have the capacity to encourage those around you. And when you see the difference your endurance makes, it fuels a deeper desire to serve, to keep going, and to add value to others' lives.

So how do we persevere when life feels relentless?

  1. Anchor yourself in God’s strength. Philippians 4:13 reminds us, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Lean into His power when yours feels insufficient.

  2. Focus on the mission. Just as a firefighter’s duty to act keeps them moving, remembering your purpose—your family, your faith, your calling—can give you the resolve to keep pushing forward.

  3. Encourage others. Hebrews 10:24-25 urges us to “spur one another on toward love and good deeds.” As you persevere, your example can uplift those walking through their own midnight calls.

Life’s challenges will keep coming, often when we least expect them. But every time we rise again, every time we persevere, we build a legacy of strength, faith, and impact. You have what it takes to keep going. And as you do, you’ll not only transform your life but also inspire those around you to do the same.
